Aromatherapy Oils vs. Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

Aromatherapy oils and therapeutic grade essential oils are not the same thing. How they differ, why quality costs more, and what to watch for when buying.

Want to know the difference between aromatherapy oils and therapeutic grade essential oils? We use all kinds of oils and creams at Bella Reina Spa, in our facials and body treatments. The best of them are sold as “therapeutic grade essential oils”, and it helps to know what that label is actually telling you.

Real, high-quality distilled oils always cost more. Holistic aromatherapy is the practice of using scent to help the body and mind relax. The smell is so divine that you will remember it forever. Many people find that aromatherapy helps them unwind, sleep a little better and feel less stressed, and it can be a lovely addition to a self-care routine. It is not a medical treatment, and it doesn’t replace care from your doctor. Beware of heavenly smelling adulterated oils which contain synthetic fragrances.

The Difference Between Aromatherapy Oils and Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

Therapeutic quality essential oils can take you on a sensory journey, one that many people find soothing and balancing. These oils are quite different from ordinary aromatherapy oils. So, what does therapeutic grade essential oil mean? There is no official grading body, so the phrase describes how the oil is made. Environmental considerations matter, and so do harvesting, distillation, and bottling. If the quality of the crop is good, the oil quality will be good too, and the price will usually be a little higher. That is the main difference between everyday aromatherapy oils and therapeutic grade oils.

Therapeutic quality essential oils like Thyme, Rosemary, or Basil come in several chemotypes, meaning versions of the same plant with different natural chemical make-ups. Those varied components are what give each oil its character. The oils are the plant’s volatile liquids, obtained by distilling seeds, bark, roots, leaves, stems, fruits or flowers, from plants that are wild as well as cultivated. Many people use them to feel more relaxed after a long day or to ease everyday tension. One example is the Stress Relief Aromatherapy Body Spray by Bella Reina, a blend many of our clients reach for when they want to calm down and unwind.
